What is Micro Sim Adapter?

A SIM card is the little chip in a GSM cell phone that holds your subscriber information. A micro SIM, also known as a 3FF or "third form factor" SIM, is a smaller version of a SIM card that holds the same data, but is not physically compatible with larger SIM cards (2FF, "second form factor") like the ones used by mobile operators. Micro SIM was released due to the need of very small cards designed for devices whose secondary purpose would be to communicate, such as the digital cameras or watches. As Micro SIM chip is more technically advanced than the one in standard SIM, contact area remains the same and backward compatibility is preserved. The result is that the third form factor is a smaller version of the existing plug-in card, with much of the excess plastic cut away, but in such a way as not to impose restrictions on the chip size.

Make your own Micro Sim card

Traditional SIMs measure 15 x 25mm and have angled corner. The new micro-SIM is officially 12 x 15mm. That's effectively the size of just the normal SIM contact area. Why Micro Sim Adapter?

While the news of Apple's iPad having 3G wasn't exactly a surprise, the move to a new format for the SIM certainly was. Untill the release of iPad 3G , the microSIM card was used only in marginal GSM products such as watches. New smaller form factor allows MicroSIM to fit in these tiny devices. There is absolutely no clue what justification Apple had to switch to this new format. The advantage is that chips of both new MicroSIM and "old" standart SIM (also called MiniSIM) are compatible. However size is different. With the new MicroSIM Adaptor you will be able to change SIMs between new (iPad, iPhone 4) and other GSM devices (phones, modem, etc.).
